The Family and Medical Leave Act (“FMLA”) was passed by Congress in 1993 in an effort to “promote the stability and economic security of families.” The FMLA requires covered employers to permit employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave per year; however, the leave must be requested for one of the following statutory purposes:
